Experience the Art of Social/Medalist Ballroom, New Vogue and Latin American at StudioDKP

Ballroom Dancing as a collective term is made of three styles in New Zealand

  • International Standard (Ballroom)
  • International Latin American
  • New Vogue (Sequence Dancing)

You do not need a partner as we teach Solo syllabus for lead and follow.  In addition we welcome same sex partnerships or can try and provide you with a senior partner in the class.  You will always have a senior partner for your medal exams, should you wish to take the medal classes.

International Standard

There are five dances in International Standard

  1. Waltz
  2. Slow Foxtrot
  3. Tango
  4. Vienesse Waltz
  5. Quickstep

StudioDKP will teach all of these dances and we deliver syllabus in line with the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance). Our Principal, Doug Pouwhare is an Examiner and Fellow with the NZ Federation of Teachers of Dance as well as World Dance Council Adjudicator.  He ensures that the syllabus is correct for Social to Medalist classes.

International Latin American

There are five dances in International Latin American

  1. Cha Cha Cha
  2. Samba
  3. Rumba
  4. Paso Doble
  5. Jive

StudioDKP will teach all of these dances and we deliver syllabus in line with the ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) and Laird Technique. New Vogue – Sequence Dancing

This style is only danced in NZ and Australia and it has a social, medalist and competitive branch.  There are fifteen dances and StudioDKP will teach all of these dances as we work our way through the syllabus.  They’re extremely popular for social dances as everyone dances the same steps and heads in the same direction (less crashes lol). StudioDKP will deliver syllabus in line with the Boyd and Laird techniques respectively.

Programmes for All Ages

  • Kids & Teens Classes (Ages 5-16) – Fun and interactive sessions introducing young dancers to the fundamentals whilst building confidence, coordination, and a love for movement.

  • Adult Ballroom and Latin Classes  – Designed for all skill levels, our structured courses focus on one Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue dance per block, making learning engaging and enjoyable.

  • Private Lessons – Personalized coaching for individuals and couples can be arranged with any of our teachers.

Additional Opportunities

Medal Exams – Showcase your progress with performances in front of an examiner, family, and friends, receiving valuable feedback and recognition.

Social Dances – We will hold a Social once a term and encourage you to come along, bring a plate and a drink, and enjoy the company of fellow dancers.
